Coyote and Bear

With Connections Questions

Once upon a time, Coyote and Bear were friends. One day they were sitting and talking together.
"Friend, Coyote," said Bear, "would you like to plant a garden with me? We could plant the garden together.  We could look after the garden together.
We could divide what grows in the garden. Then, when the cold wind comes, we could both have much to eat."
" Friend, Bear," said Coyote, "I would like to plant a garden with you.  We will plant the garden together.  We will look after the garden together, but how will we divide what grows in the garden?"
"Well, " said Bear, "there is the part of the garden that grows on top of the ground, and there is the part of the garden that grows under the ground.  Friend, Coyote, which part of the garden would you like?"

Coyote was always trying to get the best of everything, but he did not know very much about gardening. However, he did know that Bear was always digging in the ground for things that he liked. The best things in the garden must be under the ground.
So Coyote said, "Friend Bear, you take the part of the garden that grows on the top of the ground, and I will take the part of the garden that grows under the ground."
Bear went and got some corn to plant in the garden. He knew Cotyote did not know anything about how corn grew. Bear thought that he would play a trick on the Coyote.

Bear and Coyote planted the corn together. The sun and the rain helped the corn to grow, and pretty soon it became time to divide the corn.

Bear took the part of the corn that grew on top of the ground. He carried it to his house. His wife was veryn happy to have so much corn to eat. Bear and his wife laughed at Coyote, who had asked for the part of the garden that grew under the ground.
When Coyote came to get his corn, he began to dig in the ground, but he could not find anything to eat. Then, he went to Bear and said, "Bear, we planted this garden together, and we looked after it together, but now I have no corn to eat."
"Friend, Coyote," said Bear. "Did you not ask for the part of the garden that grew under the ground?"
     "Yes," said Coyote. "I did."
"And do you have the part of the garden that grew under the ground?" asked Bear.
     "Yes, said Coyote, "I do!"
"Then you have that which you asked for," said Bear, and he went into his house and went to sleep.
Sometime after this, Bear said to Coyote.  "Friend, Coyote, "how would you like to plant a garden with me?
Coyote said, "Friend, Bear, I would like to plant a garden with you, but when we divide, I will take the garden that grows on top of the ground."
"All right!" said Bear, and he went off to get some potatoes to plant in the garden. He knew that Coyote did not know anything about how potatoes grew. Bear thought that he would play a trick again on Coyote, who was always trying to play a trick on others.
Coyote and Bear worked together. They planted the potatoes together. They looked after the potatoes together. The sun and the rain helped the potatoes to grow.  Pretty soon it became time to divide the potatoes.
Coyote took all that was in the garden that grew on top of the ground. He carried it to his house. He and his wife looked and looked, but they could find nothing that they liked to eat.
     Coyote's wife became very angry.
"Go and get something good to eat," said the wife! And if you do not find something good to eat, never come back!""
Coyote went back to the garden. There was Bear digging up the good potatoes.
"Friend, Bear," said Coyote, we planted the garden together. We looked after the garden together, but now I have no potatoes that I can eat."
Bear said, "Friend, Coyote, did you not ask for that part of the garden that grows on top of the ground?"
     "Yes, I did," said Coyote.
"Do you have that part of the garden that grew on the top of the ground?" asked Bear.
     "Yes," said Coyote, "I do!"
"Then you have that which you asked for," said Bear.
Bear carried his potatoes to his house. His wife was very happy to have the good potatoes to eat. Bear laughed at Coyote, who was always trying to get the best of everything.
And from that day to this, Coyote will not talk to Bear.
